Prospective Students

PhD in Nursing Science Program

Why accelerate your career with a PhD in nursing science from the University of Florida ?

A PhD in Nursing Science is the pinnacle of the academic nursing career. Nursing professionals holding a PhD in nursing science have an endless stream of career opportunities in health administration, clinical research and advanced clinical practice. The PhD is also the gateway to a career in nursing education, where qualified faculty are greatly needed to alleviate a growing nursing faculty shortage, a crisis that has eclipsed the nursing shortage itself.

Nurses with PhD preparation have opportunities in social, governmental, and health care organizations, as well as traditional careers in univ e rsity and college education. The career options for those who aspire to be nursing educators are limitless, and a Ph.D in nursing science expands the role of nursing educators to practice research and be expert clinicians.

The UF College of Nursing has the oldest and one of the most respected nursing doctoral programs in the state, and provides the nursing doctoral student access to expert nursing researcher faculty and cutting-edge technological resources. The College's role in a world-class health science center and network of interdisciplinary health care centers offers students the chance to work with a number of other esteemed interdisciplinary faculty and colleagues from the Colleges of Dentistry, Public Health and Health Professions, Medicine, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine. In addition, UF is home to the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute of UF, the UF Genetics Institute and the UF Shands Cancer Center.

Students whose prior study, work experience and proposed research focus, are congruent with the research focal areas of the College of Nursing are strongly encouraged to apply. Research focal areas are listed under Program Description.

Note: The College of Nursing will be hosting a PhD prospective student seminar in Gainesville on April 19th and Jacksonville on April 21st.
